Rubber Dam and PTFE Strategies for Non-Ferrule Teeth

Restoring severely compromised non-ferrule teeth is one of the most challenging situations in adhesive restorative dentistry. In these cases, predictable bonding is not only dependent on the adhesive system or restorative material, but also on the stability and cleanliness of the clinical environment.

This course introduces Absolute Isolation as a fundamental concept in Biomimetic Restorative Dentistry. Absolute isolation is not simply the placement of a rubber dam. It is the continuous control of moisture, fluid, soft tissue, and mechanical stability throughout the adhesive procedure.

The course first focuses on clinical strategies for achieving absolute isolation with rubber dam. Participants will learn practical techniques such as punching design, clamp selection, clamp and floss stabilization, sheet tension control, leakage management, and anterior and posterior isolation strategies.

The course then introduces PTFE-assisted extension of rubber dam isolation. In clinical situations where conventional rubber dam isolation alone is difficult, such as non-ferrule teeth, subgingival margins, deep margins, vertical preparations, BOPT, and bridge cementation, PTFE can be used to extend and stabilize the isolated field. PTFE helps control sulcular fluid, retract and protect soft tissue, and create a more stable adhesive environment.

PTFE isolation is not a replacement for rubber dam isolation. It is an extension strategy for achieving absolute isolation in more challenging clinical situations.

Through lectures and hands-on training, participants will learn how to combine rubber dam isolation, specialized clamps, floss stabilization, PTFE, Bio-Base development, and adhesive luting protocols to restore structurally compromised teeth with a biomimetic approach.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of Absolute Isolation in biomimetic adhesive dentistry.
  • Recognize that absolute isolation is not simply the placement of a rubber dam, but the continuous control of moisture, fluid, soft tissue, and mechanical stability during adhesive procedures.
  • Apply clinical strategies for rubber dam-based absolute isolation, including punching design, clamp selection, floss stabilization, sheet tension control, and leakage management.
  • Understand the limitations of conventional rubber dam isolation in difficult clinical situations such as non-ferrule teeth, subgingival margins, deep margins, and structurally compromised teeth.
  • Use PTFE-assisted isolation as an extension strategy when conventional rubber dam isolation alone is not sufficient.
  • Create a stable adhesive environment for Bio-Base development and adhesive reconstruction in non-ferrule teeth.
  • Understand how advanced isolation protocols can improve adhesion and support long-term restorative success.

Takeshi Tsuruta

Takeshi Tsuruta is a general dentist practising Biomimetic Dentistry in Aichi, Japan. He graduated from Hiroshima University in 2010 and completed his postgraduate studies in Oral Surgery at Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan, in 2019. He has also studied regenerative medicine, in addition to minimal invasive techniques.

Dr Tsuruta regularly conducts hands-on courses in Absolute Isolation and PTFE Isolation in Japan, where he shares tips and tricks for achieving absolute isolation and alternative methods to improve restorative outcomes. He is passionate about improving dental results through proper isolation and biomimetic techniques, employing the most minimally invasive and up-to-date practices.

In 2024, he become an Adjunct Professor at the Aichi-Gakuia University School of Dentistry in Nagoya, Japan. He dedicates himself to continuous learning, reading around 200-300 research articles annually, and is passionate about developing new isolation methods and clinical protocols.|

Masoud Hassanzadeh, DDS is a biomimetic restorative dentist, author, educator, and founder of a private practice in Drachten, the Netherlands. Since 2019, he has focused on minimally invasive dentistry, microscope-enhanced treatment, and the management of compromised dentition. He lectures internationally and has authored several publications and books on biomimetic restorative dentistry and cracked tooth management.
